Before you call

What to know about wildlife

The problem: Raccoons, squirrels, skunks and bats in roof spaces, chimneys and under decks. Legally distinct from insect work in most states and provinces, and often seasonally restricted while young are dependent.
How you know: Heavy movement overhead rather than scratching, damage to soffits or vents, a strong smell.
What the work involves: Humane exclusion — one-way doors and sealing — rather than poison. Bats in particular are protected in much of North America.
