Before anyone arrives

Wipe the trail with soapy water to erase the scent line, find what they were reaching — often something as small as a syrup drip — and seal or remove it. Follow the trail backwards as far as you can before you clean it, and note where it enters the room; that is the detail that shortens an inspection.

Do it yourself, or call?

Gel baits from the hardware store genuinely work on many indoor ant problems, if you resist the urge to spray: spray kills the workers you can see and hides the trail the bait needs. Call a professional for carpenter ants (large, black, active at night, sawdust-like frass), for repeated invasions after baiting, or when you cannot find the nest.

What a proper job looks like

Competent ant work starts with identifying the species, because the treatment for pavement ants, pharaoh ants and carpenter ants differs completely — pharaoh ants, for instance, split into new colonies when sprayed. Expect the technician to name the species, locate or infer the nest, and choose bait or targeted treatment accordingly rather than fogging a kitchen.
