Before anyone arrives

Vacuum thoroughly — floors, skirtings, upholstery, the pet's favourite spots — and empty the vacuum outside immediately, because vibration also triggers pupae to hatch into the spray you may apply later. Wash pet bedding hot. Book the pet's own treatment with a vet in parallel; treating the house while the animal reseeds it is how infestations persist.

Do it yourself, or call?

Light flea problems often resolve with the vacuum-wash-vet triangle above, done properly and repeated. Call a professional when bites continue after two weeks of that, in homes that were vacant and then erupted (pupae wait for a host), or for ticks around the property, which are a vegetation and wildlife management problem more than an indoor one.

What a proper job looks like

A competent flea job treats floors and harborage with an adulticide plus an insect growth regulator — the IGR is the part that breaks the life cycle — and tells you to keep vacuuming afterwards, because nothing on the shelf kills pupae. Expect honesty that a second wave of hatching is normal, not a failed treatment.
